QCA - Guarding standards

INTRODUCTION

This website uses pupils' work and case study materials to show what citizenship looks like in practice across key stages 1 to 4.

The examples of pupils' work show:

  • how the citizenship aspects of the non-statutory framework for PSHE and citizenship at key stages 1 and 2 and the statutory citizenship programmes of study at key stages 3 and 4 translate into real curriculum activities
  • the expected standard of work at different ages and key stages
  • effective use of ICT in citizenship
  • ways of addressing inclusion issues through citizenship.

The examples come from different pupils, contexts and schools. They include:

  • pupil accounts of classroom activities
  • individual pupil responses to tasks and questions
  • group responses to tasks and questions
  • accounts of open-ended investigations and projects, including school and community-based activities
  • responses to suspended timetable activities eg year conference, theme days.

For each example of work there are:

Activity objectives: these set out the purpose and the teaching and learning objectives

Activity description: this provides details of what the pupils did: a description of the context, the level of support provided to pupils and the extent to which the activity was structured.

Commentary: this explains why the piece of work:

  • is a good example of citizenship in practice; and/or
  • illustrates achievement in relation to the end of key stage descriptions at key stages 3 and 4.

Guidance from QCA on assessment, recording and reporting is available in print from QCA shop (order ref QCA/02/944) or on the QCA website at www.qca.org.uk/citizenship. This guidance sets out the requirements for assessment and reporting citizenship and suggests a framework for progression for key stages 1 to 4. It also includes material on supporting self-, peer- and group-assessment activities.
